With a population approaching 2,000, the City of Custer covers 2.54 square miles of the southwestern Black Hills and is the county seat of Custer County.
With a population of over 8,500, Custer County spans 1,559 square miles of the southwestern Black Hills. The county seat is the City of Custer. Other communities include Buffalo Gap, Fairburn, Hermosa, and Pringle.
Encompassing 71,000 acres in the Black Hills, Custer State Park is home to granite peaks, mountain lakes, forested hills, rolling plains, and abundant wildlife – including a bison herd of 1,300.
The Black Hills National Forest consists of 1.2 million acres of forested hills often described as an “Island in the Plains.” The forest offers opportunities for fishing, camping, hiking, biking, swimming, rock climbing, or just driving along its scenic byways.
