Updates to Libby Access at Your Library
Libby access is evolving. Growing digital use across South Dakota is creating new opportunities to expand e-book and audiobook access for our community.
Expanded Digital Access Across South Dakota
South Dakota libraries are entering into a new reciprocal digital lending agreement that connects several library systems through OverDrive. This partnership brings together the South Dakota Titles To Go eBook Consortium, the Black Hills Digital Library Consortium, and Siouxland Libraries.
For our patrons, this means access to a significantly broader digital collection.
Through the Libby app, library cardholders will be able to add participating libraries as “visitors” and browse their digital collections. This provides access to thousands of additional e-books and audiobooks from across the state, including larger collections than any single library could maintain on its own.
These materials are available at no additional cost to patrons and do not create additional expenses for our library beyond our current participation in OverDrive.
Items borrowed from partner libraries are available for immediate checkout. Holds cannot be placed on those partner collections, which means they are a great option when you are looking for something to read or listen to right away.
Library staff are happy to help patrons learn how to add additional libraries in Libby and explore these new options.
Updates to Digital Borrowing Limits
You may also notice updated checkout and hold limits within the Black Hills Digital Library Consortium collection.
Current limits per card are now:
- Up to 10 holds at one time
- Up to 20 items checked out at one time
As digital use continues to grow year over year, consortium libraries regularly review borrowing settings to ensure long-term sustainability and equitable access across all participating communities. Adjusting limits helps balance demand, manage wait times, and support responsible use of shared digital resources.
Digital materials are licensed and often purchased alongside physical copies of the same titles. Libraries must thoughtfully balance investments in both digital and physical collections to ensure continued access for all patrons. These updates were made at the consortium level to support that balance.
We’re Here to Help
We recognize that not everyone is equally comfortable with digital apps and settings, and that is okay. Library staff are always available to help with Libby setup, adding additional libraries, placing holds, or finding titles that meet your interests.
Whether you are new to Libby or have been using it for years, please feel free to stop by, call, or ask for assistance. We are happy to walk through these updates with you and help you make the most of your library’s digital collection.
